Magical Medieval Cornwall

Get to grips with some of the region’s most famed fishing village from the historic Boscastle to the foodie-friendly Padstow, with astroll around Clovelly’s car-free cobbled streets for good measure.

We’ll tick off some super sights too, including Tintagel Castle and Lanhydrock House & Garden.

Day 1

Depart Leyland at 0830 for the journey to Camelford arriving mid-afternoon.

Day 2 Clovelly & Bude

We spend the morning in picturesque fishing village, Clovelly. This charming place,

which overlooks Bideford Bay, has had no motorised vehicle access since the 1920s;

instead, we will encounter the resident donkeys and the sledges used for transportation

while we wander the cobbled pedestrian streets. There are a couple of museums to see –

Fisherman’s Cottage and Kingsley Museum – as well as the pretty Clovelly Court gardens

to admire. After lunch, we have free time in seaside resort, Bude. With its wild coastline

and gorgeous beaches, a coastal stroll is a fine choice here, accompanied by a traditional

Cornish cream tea or Cornish ice cream, or we can brush up on Bude’s history with a visit

to Bude Castle, a splendid Grade II listed building with a museum and art gallery.

Day 3 Boscastle & Tintagel

We continue our exploration of quaint Cornish fishing villages this morning with a visit to

Boscastle. We will have time to explore the historic harbour, which, more than 100 years

ago, was the only feasible place for a harbour along 40 miles of Cornwall’s craggy north

coast. We can also visit the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic for an enchanting journey

through British magical practice, from ancient times to the present day. In the afternoon,

we have free time in Tintagel, where the renowned Tintagel Castle, which is entwined

with the legend of King Arthur, is situated. A recently installed footbridge now links the

two separated halves of the Castle, crossing from the mainland to the headland.

Please note: visiting Tintagel Castle itself is not advised for any passengers with

limited mobility.

Day 4 Lanhydrock House & Garden & Padstow

This morning we make our way to the magnificent Lanhydrock House & Garden. We

get to grips with the two sides of Victorian life, from the kitchens, nurseries and servants’

quarters, to the luxurious family areas, featuring an elegant dining room and spacious

bedrooms. Outside, we amble around the extensive gardens with fabulous bedding plants

and gorgeous blooms. The estate occupies an impressive 1,000 acres with woodland and

tranquil riverside paths to wander, too. After time for lunch, we move to Padstow for the

afternoon to roam around the charming fishing port and famous foodie destination - Rick

Stein opened his first seafood restaurant here in 1975.
