Itinerary:
Monday
Depart Leyland at 08.00hrs for our journey to Slaley Hall with a lunch stop in Hexham en-route with time to explore and obtain lunch in the thriving market town which is rich in history and culture. Nestled between the beauty of the Northumberland National Park and the North Pennines National Landscape Hexham grew around the magnificent Abbey first built in 674ad. Depart Hexham at 14.30hrs to continue our journey to the hotel, arrive to a warm north east welcome while your case is taken to your room. Relax, stroll the grounds or take the opportunity to use the leisure facilities before joining us for dinner.
Tuesday
This morning our excursion takes us to Beamish, the outdoor Living Museum of the North. Step back in time and discover how people lived and worked in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Staff in period costume dress add to the amazing and authentic atmosphere as they tell their story on a journey through living history. Browse the schoolhouse, take a peek inside the newsagents or buy freshly baked goods in the bakery. Take the tram to Pockerley Manor to see what life was like on the farm in the 1820's. Take a seat at the Sun Inn, a good old-fashioned pub, enjoy traditional fish and chips wrapped in newspaper or visit the traditional tearoom. A great day out with complimentary vintage tram and bus rides included.
Wednesday
Today we enjoy a leisurely morning in Newcastle-upon-Tyne with free time to explore the city and obtain lunch. There's plenty to see and do including shopping on Northumberland Street, the Discovery Museum, the Great North Museum and lots of eateries and bars when you get peckish and thirsty. Perhaps head down to the river to the Quayside, famous for its views of the iconic Tyne Bridge and the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, the area is a vibrant hub featuring a mix of medieval history and modern architecture and is highly popular for its lively restaurant and bar scene. Return to Slaley Hall mid-afternoon.
Thursday
This morning travel to the ancient, historic city of Durham. Acclaimed UNESCO World Heritage Site, dominated by a magnificent Norman Cathedral and Castle perched high above the River Wear. Take the full day to explore the city and its sights. Wander the cobbled marketplace and hidden alleyways or perhaps sit and relax and enjoy some delicious food and drink offered in many places throughout this charming city.
Friday
Check out of our hotel following breakfast for the return journey home, en-route visit The Sill National Landscape Discovery Centre, located just a stone's throw from Hadrian's Wall, The Sill features exhibitions, a rooftop walk, cafe and shop. Continue our journey to take a lunch stop in historic Border city of Carlisle. Depart at 14.30hrs to continue our journey home.
