The Royal Palaces

The Royal Palaces

Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837.

Monday 9th August 2021

Buckingham Palace has been the official London residence of Britain’s sovereigns since 1837. It’s nineteen state rooms, which open for 8 weeks a year, form the heart of the working palace. You will see amongst others the Grand Staircase, the superb red and gilt State Dining Room and the Picture Gallery full of treasures collected by the Royal family over the years.  We have also included visits to Frogmore House and Kensington Palace.

Depart Leyland at 1000 for the journey to London.

Today we visit Frogmore House & Savill Garden. Situated in the Windsor Great Park, this was the stylish setting for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding reception in May 2018. A favourite royal retreat for more than 300 years, Frogmore House can only be visited by groups. It became a royal residence in 1792 when George III bought it for his wife, Queen Charlotte. The interests and talents of several generations of the royal family influenced Frogmore's interior and Queen Charlotte's passion for botany is reflected in the decoration of the house. For almost 20 years, Frogmore was the home of Queen Victoria's mother and Queen Victoria often visited Frogmore during her long widowhood and worked on her papers there. Visitors can also see the Britannia Room which is furnished with a selection of items from the Royal Yacht Britannia. When the much-loved vessel was decommissioned in 1997,  The Duke of Edinburgh arranged for the items to be moved to Frogmore.

Today we start with a visit to Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace serves as both the office and London residence of Her Majesty the Queen. It is one of the few working royal palaces remaining in the world today. Once the Queen departs for her summer holiday, Buckingham Palace opens its doors to visitors. Visitors can see the 19 magnificent State Rooms which provide the setting for ceremonial occasions and official entertaining. All rooms are furnished with many of the greatest treasures from the Royal Collection. The Summer Opening of Buckingham Palace in 2020 will include a special exhibition. Later we continue to Kensington Palace.  There's something quite special about Kensington Palace. Built in 1605 it became the royal home for William & Mary in 1689 and has since been home to a number of members of the Royal family, including most recently the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. On 24th May 1819, Princess Victoria was born in Kensington Palace, an infant who would one day rule over the largest empire the world had ever known.
