Itinerary:
Monday
Depart Leyland at 07.30hrs for our journey to Colchester with suitable comfort stops en-route. Before heading to the hotel visit historic Colchester, Briton's first city, allowing time to explore and obtain lunch. Depart at 15.30hrs to continue to the hotel for check-in, perhaps relax before your evening meal or make use of the onsite leisure facilities.
Tuesday - Thursday
Today begins in picturesque Saffron Walden, with its heritage reflecting the wealth of this medieval, market town across the ages. Explore the quirky, cosmopolitan market, held here since 1141 on Tuesdays and Saturdays. From here, take the short journey to what was once one of the largest and most opulent houses in Jacobean England, Audley End House and Gardens, to learn about its past, of the fluctuating fortunes and life both above and below stairs.
Meet your guide for a half day tour of the Essex coast and Blackwater Estuary. Hear tales of smugglers navigating the many inlets and shifting sands under the cover of darkness. Enjoy a stop in the ancient town of Maldon, home to many a Thames Barge. This afternoon, we venture to award winning Green Island Gardens. The 20 acres of private gardens were designed by its owner Fiona Edmond and display a huge range of unusual trees, shrubs, perennials and bulbs.
Today's excursion takes us to Sutton Hoo in Suffolk; on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty this awe-inspiring Anglo-Saxon royal burial site is home to one of the greatest archaeological discoveries of all time with a 17-metre-high viewing tower. The site was chronicled most recently in the Netflix series 'The Dig' where in 1938/39 archaeologists unearthed an Anglo-Saxon ship burial along with a wealth of artifacts, most iconic of which was the Sutton Hoo Helmet that now resides in the British Museum. Today we also visit nearby Woodbridge alongside the River Deben, one of the gems in Suffolks crown, with excellent shops, traditional pubs, and working tide mill; one of only two in the UK.
