The town is set in a beautiful gorge of the River Derwent with riverside gardens, wooded hillsides and rocky limestone crags, described by Lord Byron as 'Little Switzerland', followed by a return cable car ride, soaring high above the Derwent Valley to the historic Heights of Abrahams 60-acre hilltop estate with guided caven tours taking you underground through the Great Masson and Rutland Caverns. The site is on a steep hillside with amazing views with the cafe and gift shop at the top on the level near where you exit the cable car. Sensible footwear needs to be worn if you wish to visit the cavens as it can be a little uneven underfoot, please note it can be chilly, wearing something warm is advisable.
