Suffolk is one of Englandûs great rural counties, the land of Constable and Gainsborough, with soaring churches, medieval moated halls, villages with thatched and coloured cottages and broad vistas of sea and sky. The Suffolk coast has great contrasts from the busy seaside resorts of Lowestoft and Felixstowe to the wilder beauty of the estuaries and marshes. Claydon, on the outskirts of Ipswich, is our base for this pleasant five day break.
ITINERARY
MONDAY
Depart Leyland at 0900 for the journey south east to Ipswich
TUESDAY to THURSDAY
At leisure in Ipswich with the following excursions
Full day guided excursion to the idyllic villages of Constable Country, including the birthplace of the famous painter at East Bergholt. The church at Dedham and the little hamlet of Flatford Mill were favourite landscape subjects and you can soak up these scenes of rural England at first hand
Today's drive takes us into the rural north of Suffolk to the time warp seaside town of Aldeburgh, little changed for many years. From here we continue to historic Southwold and in the afternoon we have a short break in Ipswich before returning from here to our hotel.
Full day excursion. This morning we have a ride to historic Bury St Edmunds, famous for its Abbey Gardens and the Angel Hotel, where Dickens had Mrs Pickwick stay. We have time to explore the town before our afternoon visit to Lavenham, one of our best preserved medieval villages with its many colourful and half-timbered houses.
